About the Investigator
Dr. Ahmed is the director of Neonatal research in the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. He is the founder of Pulmonary hypertension program at Cohen Children’s Medical Center and Northwell Health. He is an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, and instructor at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research of Northwell Health. Northwell Health comprises more than 20 hospitals with 12 newborn services, more than 40,000 births per year, and more than 4,000 NICU admissions per year.

Dr. Ahmed earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at Suez Canal University. He completed internship, residency, and master degree in Pediatrics at university of Suez Canal, Egypt. He also completed residency of Pediatrics at UNC, Chapel, Hill, NC and completed medical genetic and Neonatology fellowship at Duke University, NC. He earned his Ph.D degree from both university of Duke and Suez Canal University.

Research Focus
Dr. Ahmed’s research focuses on neonatal lung biology and oxidative stress. The primary focus is the effect of free radicals induced by hyperoxia/hypoxia exposure on premature lung. He and his team study the effects of free radicals on lung development and angiogenesis which eventually lead to development of many serious health problems e.g. chronic lung disease and pulmonary hypertension, which have high morbidity and mortality among neonates.

Dr. Ahmed also explores new therapeutic modalities for our neonates’ health challenges including new vasodilators and new anti-oxidants. He and his team are also trying new prenatal approach in treating neonates lung disease prenatally (e.g. congenital diaphragmatic hernia).

In addition to his basic/transitional research focus, he is also involved in many clinical studies based on the database developed for his pulmonary hypertension patients and is also part of multicenter clinical trials as a study site.
