Dr. Bin Fan received his BS, MS degrees from Nankai University, China in 2008 and 2011, respectively, and PhD degree from Michigan State University, East Lansing in 2017. His PhD thesis was focused on diamond devices for Optogenetics and neurotransmitter detection, which solved the heating effect during µLED driven optical stimulation by utilizing diamond as a heat spreader and mechanical property mismatch between tissue and diamond material by inventing a fabrication method of making diamond on polymer substrates in large scale.
Since April, 2017, he joined the Center for Bioelectronic Medicine as a Post-doctoral Research Trainee at the Feinstein institute for medical research in both Bioelectronic and Biosensing Lab and Microfabrication Lab.
The research area of Dr. Fan is focused on miniaturized biocompatible neural interfaces for neural stimulation, neurochemical and neurophysiological signals sensing, which includes:
- Fabrication of flexible electrodes for neural electrical or optical stimulation (AKA: Optogenetics) and recording.
- Electrochemical sensing of neurotransmitters using various of electrochemical techniques such as Cyclic voltammetry, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Choronoamperometry and etc.
- Analog / digital circuit and embedded system design for neural stimulation and recording.
- Microwave system design such antenna and resonators for wireless, passive sensing.
