About the Investigator

Dr. Lampe has dedicated his career to the research and development of new technologies to monitor and treat cardiac arrest. One of his principle research foci has been to better understand chest compression generated blood flow. The research that he has conducted has shown that chest compression depth can be related to coronary perfusion pressure, and that our kinematic description of chest compression is incomplete. The current focus of this effort is on improving the amount of forward blood flow generated by chest compression.

Research Focus

Thermokinetics of Therapuetic Hypothermia:

Dr. Lampe’s research into the thermokinetics of therapeutic hypothermia has focused on the creation and characterization of devices to create an ice particulate saline slurry for medical cooling applications. His research has elucidated the presence of significant temperature gradients in the body when cooling is initiated during ongoing cardiac arrest or CPR.

Metabolic Derangement:
Dr. Lampe’s research into metabolic derangement after resuscitation from cardiac arrest has focused on understanding mitochondrial alterations after ischemia/reperfusion injury as well as inflammatory/biochemical alterations after reperfusion. This effort has highlighted complex 1 in the mitochondrial electron transport chain as a site susceptible to alteration after reperfusion as well as the presence of highly unexpected metabolic byproducts (e.g. lysophospholipids, bile salts) after prolonged ischemia.
