About the Investigator

Harold Silverman began his studies at Binghamton University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology in 2010 and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Anthropology in 2012. He went on to earn his Doctor of Philosophy in the Molecular Basis of Medicine from the Donald and Barbra Zucker School of Medicine in 2018. His PhD work was done in the Laboratory of Biomedical Sciences at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research under the mentorship of Dr. Kevin J. Tracey and Dr. Sangeeta S. Chavan. There, Dr. Silverman studied the inflammatory reflex, focusing on understanding the role of sensory vagus nerve signaling in inflammation. His work has been presented at national and international conferences including the SHOCK society meeting, the Society for Neuroscience and at the 13th Key Symposium on Bioelectronic Medicine.

Research Focus

Dr. Silverman is interested in understanding vagus nerve signaling in the inflammatory reflex. He began by studying the forebrain cholinergic system’s control over peripheral inflammation with. His current research focus is on understanding how peripheral inflammation signals to the brain through the afferent arm of the inflammatory reflex. During his studies he helped develop and standardize a methodology for recording cervical vagus nerve activity in mice.  He uses this methodology to discern specific signaling mechanisms both electrically and molecularly through the afferent arm of the inflammatory reflex.
